The Importance of Customs Duty
Customs duty is based around the three pillars of:
Tariff Classification:
Tariff classification involves the process of assigning a Harmonized System (HS) code. This is a number assigned internationally to determine customs duty, import VAT, licensing, or potential restrictions or other trade measures attached to the goods when crossing international borders.
Using an incorrect code can result in your goods being delayed at the frontier, extra duty costs, fine, or even having goods turned away or seized at the border. A 6-digit number is recognised internationally, and further digits are added to create a 10-digit code which you will often see on British imports/exports to further describe the product in more detail.
We are able to review and provide codes as accurately as possible to ensure you are paying the right customs duty and import VAT.
Valuation:
Ensuring the correct valuation method and costings are used for your goods is pivotal to compliance and transparency. Using a standardised process to determine value ensures the correct duty is paid on the items at a fair price and avoids reputational damage or potential accusations of evasion of duty.
There are 6 methods of valuation outlined by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and these cover all possibilities, including goods which have never been seen before, meaning there are no excuses for miscalculation.
We can assist in valuation processes to ensure a standardised procedure, limiting the potential for errors and unforeseen costs.
Origin:
The origin of a product is equally as important at the first two points in determining the duties involved in import and export. For raw materials, this is where the produce is obtained or grown. Where manufacturing or finished items are involved, the last substantial process that takes place is the country of origin.
An error often encountered is assumption that the country the goods have been shipped from are the same as the country of origin. This is often not the case because goods are often moved from location to location – either for storage or to be easily accessible to customers to support their business. Sometimes this can result in incorrect tariffs or tariff reductions being applied. We help with ensuring the correct origin of products which can even lead to potential for repayment, should a preference have been applied.
We provide bespoke auditing packages to ensure your compliance with HMRC and other worldwide customs authorities on these areas and more.
